History is always bound to repeat itself. This old saying rings especially true with fashion. In the fashion world we are constantly looking back for inspiration, but through modern eyes creating this combination of new and old. Personally, this is one of my absolute favorite things about fashion. I’ll be the first to admit that sometimes these hybrid trends can be a little tacky, but more often than not they turn out extremely well. This definitely holds true for this season because guys, 90s grunge has officially made a comeback. With this epic return comes trends like loose fitting jeans and tying shirts and jackets around the waist.

These jeans are actually 100% authentic 90s. I got them from a vintage store here in Austin called Frock On. I am a stylist for a fashion magazine on campus, and went in for the first time fairly recently because I was pulling clothes for some shoots. I actually pulled these jeans and then ended up buying them… along with a few other things. Frock On does a really great job of stocking their store with stuff that has found its way back into style. This gives you the opportunity to sport something trendy, without having to worry about anyone else wearing the exact same thing. Besides getting a one of a kind garment, going vintage can also save you money! I got these jeans for just $28.

Part of the thrill of finding vintage items is getting to mix them in with contemporary garments, such as this mesh tank. These jeans are very urban looking so I wanted to keep that same thing going with my top. This tank is basically the definition of urban. It’s mesh like an athletic style jersey with the same type fit, but the geometric print adds some high fashion to its sporty feel. To get that 90s vibe that I was going for, I opted for this lightweight denim jacket tied around the waist.

I completed this ensemble with black Converse high tops to tie the whole look together. For the finishing touches, I kept my accessories fairly simple with some classic Ray-Bans, my go-to silver handbag, and this chunky dark silver necklace. I put on a quintessential 90s shade of berry lipstick and tied my hair up in a ponytail with a black scrunchie for a little more throwback action.

The 90s are hands down one of my favorite decades and I cannot wait to rock this trend some more this season. It’s too soon to tell if this trend is a just fad or if it’s got staying power. Personally, I’m hoping for the latter… ‘Cause I want it thaaaaat way.

Yes, that is a Backstreet Boys reference.
