Ponchos have returned! The last time they were in style was about 10 years ago. I was in 6th grade and not quite so fashion forward. I was still into wearing boy clothes half the time and just barely starting to dip my toes into fashion. I remember my mom trying to get me to wear little girly ponchos from Limited Too and Gap and I didn’t want any part of it.
Clearly a few things have changed since then… I no longer dress like a boy, and I’m loving ponchos the second time around. The fringed, sweater-like ones from my childhood are back, but what’s really in right now are these poncho/cape hybrids. They’re a total staple this fall! This trend is basically a socially acceptable/fashionable way of wearing a blanket around town. What’s not to love about that?
From a design perspective, there isn’t a whole lot of craftsmanship that goes into a poncho. They’re really simple and inexpensive to make. Do not, I repeat DO NOT, spend an arm and a leg on one of these things guys. There are plenty of affordable options out there, and for something as simple as this you really don’t have to worry too much about quality. I stumbled upon this one at American Eagle and fell in love with the colors and the tribal print. It was (and still is) on sale for just $34.99!
I paired this poncho with a neutral suede top, my favorite olive jeans, and gold booties. I also added some earrings and a dainty turquoise ring for a little added color. To finish off the look, I tied everything together with this awesome agate necklace. Other than the poncho, it’s my definitely my favorite part of this outfit. It was handmade here in Austin by a fellow longhorn, Erin Germani. She has an entire line of jewelry called E. Taylor Designs so be sure to check out her collection! I’m obsessed with all of her stuff.
This is the perfect casual, fall look for all of the upcoming Thanksgiving festivities. Besides being cute and trendy, ponchos are also loose and flowy… Perfect for covering up some post turkey bloating. ‘Tis the season for binge eating!
