Every year the University Fashion Group (UFG) puts on the University of Texas fashion show to showcase the senior designers’ collections. The audience has grown from a mere 500 in 1997 to a whopping 5,000 in 2014. This year’s show,Fusion, will feature over 120 designs from fashion design students just like me! In this post I interviewed one of the senior designers, Kat Wang, about her designs.

RS: What does fashion mean to you?
KW: It means expressing yourself, showing who you are and who you’d like to be.
RS: How do you think your life has influenced your understanding of fashion?
KW: Growing up in a suburban town in North Carolina I felt really suppressed, because everyone conformed to certain trends, and I’ve always wanted to stand out from the cookie cutter type (that’s why I designed a black bridal dress). After traveling a lot my senior year and breaking away from mainstream music and discovering other bands (music has influenced me a lot in designing) my styled developed as edgier and sexier (love cutouts and deep-v necklines).
RS: When did you first become interested in fashion/know that’s what you wanted to study?
KW: I first became interested in fashion in high school by reading magazines, and then I took some design and sewing classes. The more I learned about it, the more I loved it, and I can’t imagine myself working in any other industry.
RS: How would you describe your own personal style?
KW: Minimalistic and edgy.
RS: Where do you like to shop?
KW: I like to shop at H&M and Urban Outfitters, both fit my style very well.<span “font-size:10.0pt;=”” font-family:times”=””>
RS: How do you spend your free time?
KW: My favorite thing to do in my free time is to see live music at concerts and music festivals.
RS: What are your favorite things to design?
KW: Eveningwear and cocktail dresses.
RS: Who is your style icon?
KW: Kate Moss.
RS: Who is your favorite designer?
KW: Balmain, Alexander McQueen, Rodarte, Donna Karan.
RS: What was the inspiration behind your collection?
KW: Inspired by the Gothic architecture of the Medieval period, I designed a black bridal gown. I was mainly inspired by the grand, tall but slim structure of the buildings and cathedrals, as well as the distinctive pointed arches and vaulted ceilings. <span “font-size:10.0pt;=”” font-family:times;mso-fareast-font-family:”times=”” roman”;mso-bidi-font-family:=”” “times=”” roman””=””>
RS: What is your dream job?
KW: My dream job is to work as a designer at Donna Karan or Alexander Wang.
RS: What are your plans for the future?
KW: My plan for the future is to move to New York to intern, and then hopefully get hired into the company.
