Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is one of the greatest fashion icons of all time. She is credited for popularizing looks such as clean suits with a skirt hem down to middle of the knee, three-quarter sleeves on notch-collar jackets, sleeveless A-line dresses, above-the-elbow gloves, low-heel pumps, and pillbox hats—all of which were huge successes around the world and became forever known as the “Jackie” look.
Jackie is best known for her style during JFK’s presidency in the early part of the 1960s. The 60s were a time of many new and diverse trends, a large number of which were influenced by social movements. The early to mid 1960s were defined by London Modernists known as “Mods.” The Mod look was sophisticated and classy, mimicking the clothing and hairstyles of high fashion designers in France and Italy.
Classic meets 1960s mod with this coat. It instantly reminded me of something Jackie would have worn during her time as First Lady. The large checked print and the boxy kimono cut just scream 1960s. To complete this Jackie inspired look, I paired this coat with a simple black dress, booties, tights, and elegant accessories. I also added a red lip to keep things festive for the holidays.
Jackie’s style was classic and elegant. One of the things I love most about her is that she was so classy. She was able to become a global fashion influencer all while dressing like a lady. She is such an excellent reminder for all of us gals today that fashion doesn’t have to be about being sexy. It’s about creating your own look and owning it—whatever that look may be.
